A Century of Excellence: Jet Linx Chicago Pilots Receive the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award

Jet Linx Chicago recently celebrated two extraordinary pilots, whose combined 100+ years of experience in aviation earned them a distinction held by less than 1% of all U.S. pilots.

On July 16 in Chicago, the FAA presented Bob Thompson and Jeff Bartels with the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award, the agency’s highest recognition for civil aviation pilots. This award honors those with over 50 years of safe piloting experience with no accidents, incidents, or violations.

For Jet Linx Chicago, having two pilots receive this recognition in the same year underscores our unwavering commitment to safety and excellence at the local level. It is a reminder that our strength lies in the caliber of the people who carry our name and, most importantly, carry our passengers safely to their destinations.

Bob Thompson: Decades of Dedication to Safety

Bob Thompson’s corporate aviation journey began with a Cessna 150 in 1979 at Chicago-Hammond Airport. Over more than 50 years, he has logged approximately 18,000 flight hours and earned seven type ratings, piloting everything from King Airs to Gulfstreams and Challengers.

Thompson’s distinguished career has involved flying for three different Fortune 500 companies and even handling the Stanley Cup while flying the Chicago Blackhawks. His commitment to continuous learning has kept him current with the latest aviation technologies and safety protocols.

“After 50 years my only advice to other pilots is that there are no shortcuts,” Thompson said. “If you do everything the right way and adhere to the standards, you’ll have a long and meaningful career. I feel very blessed to have made it this far, but I did so because I took the time to do things the right way.”

Jeff Bartels: Space Stations, Software, and Flight Certifications

Jeff Bartels began his aviation journey with his first solo flight in 1972 and earned his private pilot’s license in February 1973. Those early years were spent in the bustling aviation environment around Minneapolis, training at Southport, Flying Cloud, and St. Paul Holman Field.

Bartels made a unique job transition in the 1980s, working as a software engineer at NASA/McDonnell Douglas on airlock technology for the Space Station Freedom project. He eventually returned to serious flying in the early 1990s with his Certified Flight Instructor reinstatement, demonstrating the adaptability that has defined his career. Bartels went on to work for various Part 135 and Part 91 flight departments, including McDonald’s Corporation, and later spending eight years as the personal pilot for the Chicago White Sox owner and family. He has accumulated over 11,500 flight hours with more than 5,700 hours in Challenger 300/350 aircraft, making him one of the most experienced pilots on this aircraft type.

“Piloting has been a tremendous opportunity for me and due to the advancements in technology there has been a surge in opportunities in this field,” Bartels said. “Young aspiring aviators shouldn’t think twice about entering the industry if it’s a passion, but they should always be adaptable to change.”
