Bay of Islands

The Bay of Islands is a subtropical micro-region known for hundreds of beaches, accompanied by a thriving Māori culture. A three-hour drive or 35-minute flight north of Auckland, the Bay of Islands encompasses 144 islands with dramatic views from land and sea. This destination is a paradise for those that enjoy world-class golf, rustic beaches, fishing, snorkeling, diving, sailing, kayaking, hiking and even hunting wild boar.

The charming oceanside town of Russell offers historic buildings and a seaside setting full of cafés, restaurants and art galleries for a truly romantic quality. The town’s streets retain their original layout and names from 1843, and many of its historic buildings can still be visited today. At the wharf, you can catch a game fishing boat to hunt for marlin, tuna, broad bill and sharks. Nearby Long Beach is a nice place for a swim, and many of the Bay of Islands daily cruises also use Russell as a departure point.

With crystal-clear water and golden sands, Matauri Bay is a popular surfing venue in an easterly swell. At other times it’s a peaceful beach for swimming and snorkeling. The ridge above the bay offers panoramic views over the headland and out to the Cavalli Islands. Golfers also adore Kauri Cliffs golf resort, known for dramatic views of the Pacific.
