Something New: A Tale of Two Islands
More than 1,000 miles from its nearest neighbor (Australia), New Zealand is a remote island country comprised of two main islands, a number of smaller islands, and countless natural wonders.
New Zealand was one of the last places on Earth to be settled and inhabited. The island nation has a unique array of vegetation and animal life, much of which developed during the country’s prolonged isolation. It is the sole home, for example, of the long-beaked, flightless kiwi, the ubiquitous nickname for New Zealanders. Formerly the largest country in Polynesia, it was annexed in 1840 and did not become fully independent until 1947.
Active volcanoes, spectacular caves (some alive with glow worms!), deep glacier lakes, verdant valleys, dazzling fjords, long sandy beaches, and the spectacular snowcapped peaks—all contribute to New Zealand’s diversity and scenic beauty.
The North Island is the most populated, with Auckland towards the very north end. The North Island of New Zealand ss home to four of the country’s seven international airports and 75% of the population, including the city of Auckland. It is also home to more of New Zealand’s Māori heritage, along with beaches and geothermal wonders.
The South Island is more rural, but where the dramatic beauty of glaciers and fjords abound. South Island also hosts the lovely resort town of Queenstown. The landscape is rugged, with the Southern Alps acting like a snow-capped spine that runs down the center of the island, sure to please outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds. For an added bonus, the Marlborough region produces some of the best wine in the world.
