The Balancing Barn

Suffolk, England

Just as its name suggests, this vacation rental is truly an architectural wonder and is at the top of many architecture enthusiasts’ bucket lists. The Balancing Barn was designed by the award-winning Dutch architecture practice MVRDV – known for creating happy and adventurous places.

This cantilevered home extends over the edge of a nature reserve and appears to “balance” as a swing suspends from underneath the house. This gravity-defying structure resides in Suffolk, England, surrounded by six acres of private gardens and 138 acres of Suffolk Wildlife Trust land.

Besides its balancing act, the Balancing Barn is also known for its traditional barn shape and reflective steel-tile exterior mirroring its natural surroundings and endless sky – a nod to local steel-covered farm buildings. The interior space is just as extraordinary. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide views of surrounding ponds, meadows and colorful sunsets. The 100-foot-long home boasts repeating geometric designs and a modern open floor plan adorned with thoughtfully-selected art canvases and décor.

Suffolk, just under three hours from London, is the first place in the English countryside to see the sunrise. It’s the perfect place for you to unwind and unplug with world-class culture and cuisine, wildlife reserves and, of course, the Balancing Barn. This unique vacation rental offers you and your family a place to enjoy a memorable and inspirational escape.

Emil Bach House

Chicago, Illinois

Nestled in Rogers Park, near Chicago’s vibrant northside and walking distance from Lake Michigan, stands The Emil Bach House – 1,500 square feet of American history, culture and art. Although there are several Frank Lloyd Wright homes scattered across the country, the 1915 prairie-style mansion is the only Wright home in Chicago and one of the few you can actually rent. The two-story home boasts Wright’s famous geometric details, modern window designs. Meticulously maintained and strategically updated with contemporary furnishings to help preserve Wright’s vision, the Emil Bach House is as authentic as it gets.

World-renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright is most known for his large-scale structures like Tokyo’s Imperial Hotel and the Guggenheim in New York. However, he is also known for his ingenious designs for practical family homes. In 1914, Wright was approached by Anna and Emil Bach, president of Chicago’s Bach Brick Company, to design

and build their family dream home, quoting them a cost of $10,000 (equivalent to $250,000 in today’s market). The house was later named as a Chicago landmark in 1977 and has appeared on the U.S. Register of Historic Places since 1979.

Over a century later, this architectural gem is the perfect place for your next visit to Chicagoland. During your stay, you’ll discover thoughtful modern updates, hotel-like amenities and a cozy fireplace that anchors the center of the house – surrounded by a gathering space filled with natural light. Additionally, this extraordinary home offers a beautiful outdoor space equipped with a Japanese tea room and garden.

Moen, Denmark

Although the Scandinavian design movement flourished in the Nordic countries during the 1950s, it continues to influence designs of today.

Nestled in a vast meadow on the Baltic Sea island Møn lies an unconventional villa, Birkedal. Although subtle in color, it packs drama with its nine cylindrical structures that sprawl through the forest of birch trees. Various-sized windows in each vessel help connect the home to its natural surroundings and give a wide view of the landscape and wildlife. Thin pine logs wrap around the exterior of each circular structure. Inside, you’ll find white planked walls highlighted by oak furniture and brass fixtures and décor.

This intricate cottage was designed by German architect and URLAUBSARCHITEKTUR partner, Jan Henrik Jansen – known for his private, residential and holiday homes. Inspired by elements of childhood fantasy, Jansen designed and built the Birkedal project over a period of five years. Recently finished in 2016, the award-winning structure brings new life to the historic isle.

The Isle of Møn is considered one of the most beautiful places in Denmark, with its stretch of white cliffs, sandy beaches and secret coves. Birkedal guests can reach the beach in just a short five-minute walk. If they have a craving for the city life, they can take a day trip to the nearby city of Copenhagen before returning to Birkedal to unwind.

Built by legendary California architects Buff & Hensman in 1960, this two-story mansion was once the home of American film producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Decades later, the Ajioka House was purchased by designer and entrepreneur Derek Mattison, who commissioned major award-winning renovations over a two-year period.

Massive windows and retractable walls fill the sprawling 4,200-square-feet home with natural light and allows for seamless indoor-outdoor living. Twin Palms Sinatra Estate

Palm Springs, California

The city of Palm Springs, known for its natural hot springs, stunning golf courses and tranquil spas, was dubbed Hollywood’s playground after Ol’ Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra, arrived in the 1940s. Sinatra enlisted well-respected architect Emerson Stewart Williams to design his future family home. Although Sinatra originally hoped for a Georgian-style mansion, Williams encouraged him to embrace a design more “desert appropriate.” The 4,500-square-foot estate soon became the backdrop for Hollywood-elite cocktail parties, romance and heartbreak, and even several Hollywood films.

Named after the twin palm trees adjacent to the pool, the Twin Palms Sinatra Estate’s historic importance, midcentury design and modern amenities are just a few reasons to explore this rental wonder during your next visit to Tinseltown. Guests are

easily impressed by this iconic vacation rental with features like Sinatra’s original recording studio and large sliding glass doors that open up to the famous piano-shaped pool. The use of post-and-beam architecture allows for an open floor plan and large windows that give a sense of bringing the outdoors in.

A Twin Palms personal concierge can arrange items on your itinerary during your stay – dine at some of Sinatra’s favorite restaurants, explore local museums and art galleries, spend a relaxing day at Palm Springs finest spas or enjoy a hot-air balloon ride.
