5. myLanguage

If you’re not sure your 7th grade French class prepared you for your trip to the Eiffel Tower, myLanguage has your back. This simple to use app allows you to input your question or statement; then select the language you’d like to use from the 59 available. You can select from a wide variety of dialects, all identifiable by flags and country names. Swap the language translation and your local guide can input the response in his native tongue, translating back to you. It might be a little strange to communicate through your phone face to face – but it’s worth it to ask the right question.

4. Entrain

Traveling internationally can be a lot of fun – but it can also cause a lot of strain on your sleep cycle! Entrain, a free app from the University of Michigan, can help you beat jet lag by recommending lighting schedules to help train your circadian rhythm. Olivia Walch, who coded the app, said, “It was inspired by what a nice mathematical problem jet lag is (even though it’s a miserable real world problem to have to deal with).” Don’t worry if you’re unable to stick to the recommended schedules 100% of the time: “If you can’t follow its recommended schedules exactly, no problem: the model can adapt itself in response to your lighting history and update its recommendations to take what you’ve actually done into account,” Walch added.

3. PackPoint

If the first day of your trip is spent itemizing the items you forgot to pack, sourcing them and swearing to yourself you’ll never forget them again (we’ve been there!), PackPoint will make your day. Select from a number of preprogrammed activities and watch as PackPoint creates a custom packing list for you! PackPoint will even check the weather to make sure you remember your umbrella or jacket. Once you’ve created your own packing list, you can share it to make sure everyone in your party is just as prepared.
