Mexico City

From epic street food to its chef-driven, pilgrimage-worthy restaurants, Mexico City is arguably the most exciting food city in the world. Its art scene—folk and cutting-edge contemporary—is equally dynamic. And its sophisticated hotels, grand public parks and boulevards, and chic shopping streets rival those of Europe.

As one of the oldest metropolises in the Americas, Mexico City is woven with rich histories, from the Aztec period to the Spanish conquest, to the Mexican revolution to now — and it shows in the local cultural offerings. Another appeal of Mexico City is its inexhaustibleness: activities include parks, galleries, landmarks, museums, and cantinas to name a few. While there’s no way you’ll manage to cover all of the must see and dos in one trip, sticking to one neighborhood a day keeps things manageable.

The best times to visit comes from March through May and October through December. The best weather tends to fall between March and May, and cultural events like Día de los Muertos fall between October and December. The rainy season is June to September, and torrential downpours are common. On the opposite side, winters can be quite chilly in Mexico City.

Travelers should note that no matter what time they visit, they should prepare for the high elevation that sits between 7,000 and 12,000 feet above sea level – far greater than Denver (5,280 feet). Drinking water before and during a trip is advised – especially when enjoying the city’s fine offerings of tequila and mezcal.
