John D. Snodgrass is Managing Director of Great American Holdings, a privately held Atlanta-based holding company. For more than two decades, John has rewarded investors and shareholders with exceptional returns, as Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer of some of the world’s most dynamic companies. He is a former Director of Cendant Corporation (NYSE: CD); he served as a Director, as well as President and Chief Operating Officer of HFS Incorporated (NYSE: HFS) from February 1992 until December 1997; and was Vice Chairman of HFS from September 1996 until December 1997.
John’s first management position came in 1979, as a sales and marketing associate for Atlanta-based Days Inns of America. He held numerous management positions with Days Inns during the 1980s, and was named the company’s President and Chief Executive Officer in March 1990. He oversaw the company’s acquisition by Hospitality Franchise Systems, Inc. (later renamed HFS Incorporated), and he became HFS’s President and Chief Operating Officer in February 1992.
Under John’s leadership, HFS grew from an international hotel franchising company with three hotel brands, to a global services provider and marketing powerhouse in the hotel, real estate, mortgage, relocation, gaming, timeshare and car rental businesses. During John’s tenure as President and Chief Operating Officer from 1992 to 1997, the company’s market capitalization grew from about $1 billion to more than $14 billion; shareholder value increased by more than 1,800%; and HFS achieved twenty-four consecutive record quarters of revenue and earnings per share. EPS increased at an annual compound growth rate of more than 50%, and revenues grew at an annual compound rate of more than 40%. John managed the company through the completion and integration of fourteen strategic acquisitions representing over $5 billion in value. Beginning with less than 1,000 hotels in 1992, HFS franchised outlets grew to more than 20,000 in number worldwide – including more than 6,000 hotels encompassing more than 500,000 hotel rooms, 160,000 real estate brokers and agents, and 4,000 car rental offices, reaching a total of more than 200 million consumers a year.
John graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1979, with a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial management.
